GYTA or GYTS: choosing armour by failure mode, not by habit

GYTA and GYTS share the same optical core — stranded gel-filled loose tubes around a steel-wire central member. The only real difference is the armour: aluminium-polyethylene laminate on the GYTA, corrugated steel tape on the GYTS. Buyers often pick on price per metre, which is the wrong axis.

Pick GYTS when

• The cable is directly buried, particularly in rocky or root-heavy ground
• Rodent damage has a history on the route
• The crush figure in the specification is above what APL will carry

Pick GYTA when

• The route is ducted and crush risk is controlled
• Weight matters — long aerial lashed spans, or drum weight limits at site
• Corrosion is a concern and there is no compelling crush requirement

On a ducted metro route the GYTA is usually the better engineering answer as well as the lighter one. On a direct-buried rural trunk, specifying GYTA to save a little per metre tends to get paid back with interest at the first repair.
